At The Center for Women, your abortion pill appointment includes an ultrasound, a one-on-one visit with the provider, and taking the first pill at the clinic. The entire in-office visit takes about 1 to 2 hours. You take the second set of pills at home 24 to 48 hours later. The cost is $380 and includes everything, including your follow-up visit.
When you arrive at The Center for Women, a staff member will check you in and have you fill out a brief medical history form. The paperwork covers your health background, any medications you currently take, and your last menstrual period.
The clinic is located at 10215 W. Roosevelt Rd. #101 in Westchester, IL. It is a private, professional medical office. You are welcome to bring a support person with you, though they will wait in the reception area during the medical portions of your visit.
An ultrasound is performed at the beginning of your visit to confirm your pregnancy and determine how far along you are. The abortion pill can be used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, and the ultrasound provides an accurate measurement of gestational age.
The ultrasound is quick and is done right in the clinic. Depending on how early the pregnancy is, it may be an abdominal ultrasound (on your belly) or a transvaginal ultrasound (a small, narrow wand inserted into the vagina). The provider will let you know which type is needed. The ultrasound also confirms that the pregnancy is located in the uterus. In rare cases, a pregnancy can develop outside the uterus — called an ectopic pregnancy — which is a life-threatening condition that cannot be treated with the abortion pill and requires emergency care.
The ultrasound is included in your $380 visit cost.
You will meet one-on-one with a licensed physician. The provider reviews your ultrasound results, goes over your medical history, and makes sure the abortion pill is safe and appropriate for you.
The provider explains the two-pill process, what to expect when you take the medications at home, and what symptoms are normal. You will receive clear written instructions to take home with you. This is also your time to ask any questions you have about the process, side effects, or aftercare.
The visit is private and confidential. The provider is there to give you information and care, not to judge. You do not need to explain your reasons for your decision.
You take the first pill, mifepristone, at the clinic before you leave. The provider gives you the pill and you swallow it with water. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which stops the pregnancy from growing.
Most patients feel normal after taking mifepristone. You can drive yourself home and go about the rest of your day. Some patients have light nausea or spotting, but significant symptoms after the first pill are uncommon.
You take the second medication, misoprostol, at home 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone. The clinic gives you the misoprostol pills to take home along with detailed written instructions.
When it is time, you place four misoprostol tablets between your gums and cheeks and let them dissolve for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, swallow any remaining pieces with water. Within 1 to 4 hours, you will begin to experience cramping and bleeding as your body passes the pregnancy.
Before taking misoprostol, it helps to prepare your space. Have ibuprofen (600 to 800 mg), a heating pad, thick pads (not tampons), and comfortable clothes ready. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Keep your phone nearby in case you need to call the clinic with any questions.
When to go to the emergency room: If you experience severe bleeding (soaking through 2 or more pads per hour for 2 or more hours), severe pain not relieved by ibuprofen, a fever above 100.4°F lasting more than 24 hours, or signs of an ectopic pregnancy such as sharp one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder pain, or dizziness, go to your nearest emergency room immediately. You can tell the ER staff you are having a miscarriage — the treatment is the same.
You do not need to bring much to your appointment. Here is a short list:
You do not need a referral from another provider. You do not need to bring a companion, though you are welcome to.

That is common. The ultrasound performed at your appointment will determine your exact gestational age. The abortion pill can be used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The in-office visit itself is not painful. The ultrasound may cause mild discomfort but is brief. Taking the first pill (mifepristone) by mouth does not cause pain. The cramping and bleeding happen later, at home, after you take the second medication (misoprostol).
